Jessica L. Yáñez Attorney
Jessica began working at Chapman Law Firm in 2006 as a paralegal.  Two years later, she enrolled at Elon University School of Law, and later returned to work for the firm part time as a law clerk.  As an attorney, Jessica handles removal-defense cases, family-based cases, VAWA (Violence Against Women), U visa cases, and derivative citizenship cases.  She is fluent in Spanish.

Jessica graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a B.A. degree in Spanish in 2007.  While at UNCG, Jessica earned the Student Excellence Award for Spanish, the highest honor at the undergraduate level, as well as the Outstanding Spanish Major Award.  She obtained her J.D. Degree from Elon University School of Law in 2011.  During her time at Elon, she served for two years on the North Carolina Pattern Jury Instruction Committee.  She also served as an extern for the Honorable Lindsay Davis, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge of Guilford County.  Jessica was also a member of the Moot Court team, as well as a case project manager for the Innocence Project.  A proud native of Greensboro, she is dedicated to serving her community and advocating for immigrant rights.  She is a member of the NC Bar Association and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. Her membership with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is currently pending.

One of Jessica’s proudest moments was when she assisted with an I-601 waiver in Ciudad Juarez for the spouse of an active member of the U.S. Army.  “The couple had gone to Mexico to get married before consulting an attorney, and they were shocked to learn that the husband could not return to the U.S. without a waiver.  The first day we met with them, I could see how overwhelmed they were.   Not only was the wife facing deployment, she was separated from her husband, with no idea of when he would return.  We had the case expedited, and when they called us to tell us the case was approved, they were ecstatic.”
