Attorney Jugovic appointed ICE Liaison for AILA Carolinas
GREENSBORO— Helen L. Jugovic recently was appointed ICE Liaison for the
North and South Carolina American Chapter of the Immigration Lawyers Association
(“AILA Carolinas”). With the increasing worksite enforcement efforts
by Immigration and Customs Enforcement “ICE” (formerly INS), North
Carolina employers and families are facing immigration enforcement issues much
more frequently than in recent years.
Ms. Jugovic’s role will be to advise the AILA National ICE Liaison Committee
on ICE enforcement policies and procedural issues in the Carolinas. There are
approximately 30 other state ICE Liaisons for AILA Nationwide, who will collaborate
with AILA National to help resolve local and national immigration enforcement
issues.
As the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, ICE
is primarily a law enforcement agency. In addition to enforcing immigration
laws against criminal and security threats, ICE conducts worksite I-9 audits,
investigates employers and targets undocumented workers for deportation. ICE
has approximately 15,000 employees working in 400 offices in the US.
AILA, the organization of which Ms. Jugovic is a member, is the national association
of over 10,000 attorneys who practice or teach immigration law. AILA Member
attorneys represent U.S. families who have applied for legal immigration for
their close family members, US businesses and industries who sponsor highly
skilled foreign workers, and employers and employees in deportation defense
and worksite enforcement actions.
AILA is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that has 36 chapters and
over 50 national committees. AILA is an Affiliated Organization of the American
Bar Association and is represented in the ABA House of Delegates.
